An update on what’s happening with Golemizer
With Social Gold gone for good at the end of the month I had to shut down the Altus store for non-Kongregate players to prevent players from spending money on the system at the last-minute.
So what will happen to Golemizer? Well for now I can probably make everyone feel better for at least a few months. Golemizer will remain online even though it’s now a complete expense for me. I will be using Golemizer as a way to promote my next project Star Corsairs. Even if it’s not a lot Golemizer’s website still receives over 200 unique visitors per day (not counting players accessing the game from Kongregate) so it will be like running a small advertisement campaign. So don’t be surprised if you see new Star Corsairs ads on Golemizer soon.
With the number of players that doesn’t grow much now I’m thinking of offering a subscription to be able to pay for the server. The goal would only be to keep the server online. If there’s a profit I could have made from Golemizer I would have made it months ago so this new subscription would only be to keep the game alive. I’m thinking of maybe $8-$10 per month which would require from 20 to 25 players to subscribe to pay for all expense. Any further money made would be saved for later in case the number of subscribers would drop.
To have 20 players to pay $10 per month seems to be something that can be achieved as I guess there are at least 20 players that would like to keep Golemizer around. Those subscribers would then have access to the Altus store as a reward to help keeping the game online.
There is however a problem. Me coding a new automated system to handle those subscriptions is unlikely as my coding time is already scheduled on many tasks on Star Corsairs and other side projects. So it’s quite possible I’d have to handle that manually which shouldn’t prove much of a problem if the goal is to get about 20 subscribers.
I could also force everyone to move to Kongregate as the payment system is already in place but Kongregate taking a 30% cut and the code not being prepared to automatically handle subscriptions tells me it might be more problems than anything else.
So there you have it my plan for Golemizer. I don’t know when all of this will be in place and until it’s actually done I’m not going further. I want to keep Golemizer around specially to provide a starting point for Star Corsairs (so far the in-game link to Star Corsairs found in Golemizer worked well to have people subscribe to the newsletter so it’s seems to be working).
Until I have more news to post if by any chance there’s someone interested in some kind of deal that could help keep Golemizer online (advertisement, sponsoring, I’m open to discuss any offers) just mail me at dave@machine22.com.

As a GM, and a player I have no issues paying to play. Just a few ideas I’ve thought of. Giving new players a 7-14day trial so that you can keep getting new blood. Determine how much money you need to keep it online for the month and take donations, only donators can access the game until the monthly fee is reached. Once the fee is reached let everyone back in. Keep the donation box open during the month so players can keep donating even after the goal has been reached. As for a system a paypal shopping cart so you can set a min donation, and check out system isn’t hard to configure.

Just to follow what Zifnab wrote. I do believe that as it is right now a donation model could actually work IF I make sure that players remember how much it cost per month to run the game.
I wasn’t my idea to charge to everyone but rather to open back the Altus store to subscribers. That way news players could still discover the game but long time players who care deeply about the game would help to keep it alive.
Like I said in the post it wouldn’t take much player to keep the game alive without fear of anything happening to it. Those players would have however to commit to long term plans. Of course they would get the Altus store stuff while others wouldn’t but it might mean that I might ask players to subscribe to a minimum of say 3 months instead of paying month by month just so I never get behind on payment.
With that said however I recently received an offer … Something that would keep the game as it is. I just need to decide if I go with it.

Well tell us what is the offer?
Maybe we could help?

Take the offer! Or think about it… I recently made big changes to my other life (the real one, you know?) and I cannot commit to anything. Even in the case of the free games I play I cannot commit. And I am strapped on cash because of other stuff as well. So for the next year or so pay-to-play games will not be for me.
As for blocking access to those who didn’t pay, I don’t like that. I think it’s wrong the way it’s proposed. What if only 17 players pay for a period of time (say 1 to 3 months) and only 2-3 of them show up in the day? that would make it boring.
As a crafter I can play hours without talking or having any specific interaction but at some point an MMO game needs… players. And since the economy is 95% based on players, we should not cut them out like this.
Clearly this issue needs some more thinking.

I completely agree with JF, I don’t pay to play mmos, there are -many- other out there, I’d rather move than pay to play golemizer, even though the game is very enjoyable, I’m not paying .
Most visitors come, play, leave after the tutorial island, or play for a while then leave, if people will have to start playing the number of players will drop by a lot, that is simply the truth, If I payed, I wouldn’t want to be playing the game with like 5 other active players ..
And, if I were going to pay, I’d rather pay to play a different game .
Good luck with what ever choice you make .

Whats this other option? I mean we could help you come out with a decision instead of us twiddling our thumbs praying for the best
I have to agree with JF golemizer wouldn’t be golemizer without the players

I have in theory accepted the offer I guess but I have yet to receive any further answer from the person in question so I’m waiting to get some news.
If this works out then no more worries to have for some time. Hopefully by then I will have released Star Corsairs and things will be fine.
And for the record I never said that I was thinking of FORCING players to pay. What I said was that I could add an OPTIONAL subscription for those interested to get back the stuff available in the Altus Store.
It was never question of putting an obligatory subscription fee. Maybe my initial post wasn’t clear but that’s what I was referring to when I was saying “Those subscribers would then have access to the Altus store as a reward to help keeping the game online” meaning that non-subscribers wouldn’t have access to the Altus Store BUT would still be able to play.

Don’t hold your breath. If I indeed hear back that will remain confidential. Sorry
All there is to know is that it means Golemizer will remain online as it is currently.

Plan B might be me updating Golemizer to support the new payment provider I’ll be using for Star Corsairs… If it’s not too much trouble that is. Chances are that it will be BMT Micro. Heard good things from other indie devs about them.
Not going through Paypal because of Tax headaches.

Change the sprites in golemizer ?, higher quality, wouldn’t that be GREAT ?
And attract new players with an image ” Golemizer has a new look ” and so on, people would definitely register and many more people will join . I’ve been playing for ever so I know how fun the game is regardless of the sprites . Even if you get free sprites ? You aren’t making any money from the game as it seems so why not take a day to change the sprites and see what happens, won’t do any harm right ?
Just a suggestion, I really think it would work, I would definitely help get new people to register by making sigs and advertising the game on gaming forums and such . I’m pretty good with sigs . =S
