For the release of Blimp Wars I decided to finally dive in ActionScript and build a small shooter using the same art as Blimp Wars.

The game took me 3 days to build as I was learning from the Shootorial on Kongregate. I submitted the game to Kongregate of course, NewGrounds, to Mochi Media and to a list of other Flash games portals on the same day I released Blimp Wars.

While the game didn’t received amazing reviews I now count over 11,000 plays and even managed to make $3 out of it. Remember that it was built in 3 days and it’s been released for only 7 days now. I even managed to receive 35 clicks to Blimp Wars through Mochi Media traffic share program.

Now that’s far from breathtaking and I won’t quit my day job because I made $3 from a Flash game but I’m now wondering why I haven’t done so before. I guess I was “afraid” of the Flash IDE but then I was pointed to FlashDevelop and then everything started to make sense. Go figure. Sometimes it only takes a little something to unlock your brain to something new.

The game wasn’t featured on many portals probably because I didn’t put enough work in it. But just the power of Mochi Media is enough to spread it across the web. I can only wonder what would have been the results if it was also featured on ArmorGames and MiniClip …

So what did I learn here?

1- 3 days of work were more successful (so far) than 5 months of work

2- I need to work on more Flash games

3- By releasing another Flash game a bit more polished I could probably make $4!!!

Bottom line, it’s ridiculously easy to release a Flash game. Way more than a Javascript browser based game. Potential revenues are surely much much much lower but the exposure given has no price. I only talked about portals here but by releasing a better game there’s also hope to receive reviews from some websites that are currently out of my reach with Golemizer and Blimp Wars.

I needed this bit of good news. I guess you’ll read a lot more about Flash games on this blog from now on …
